Take a knee our football boys, your protest must be known
You’ve had enough of social crimes, bad seeds you feel were sewn
The First Amendment makes it so, you must not be denied
Forget the stars, the stripes, the lost; protest with all your pride
We can’t deny you have the right to say what’s on your heart
This is what our country gives, we’ve known that from the start
But there are those of us out here who also fight for cause
And we too have the right (like you) to take a knee and pause
So mister big-time football star, please journey now with me
I’d like to take you to a place which you, I’m sure can’t see
Let’s pretend your mama died and now her funeral came
She died from working many jobs, she suffered for your fame
And now the pastor prays and asks that all in silence rise
It’s time for precious memories and the tears escape your eyes
But as you cry from memories of the one who gave your name
People all around you sit, ignoring those in pain
Hey, they just want attention for the cause they hold so dear
It was you that taught us when to strike, you’ve made that very clear
You shout “the timing isn’t right, my mom’s respect was earned!”
Yes we know your thoughts, but what you taught, my friend we’ve learned
And now you know why many are appalled when you don’t stand
Your cause will wait until we honor those who loved this land
The freedoms we enjoy each day were given with a cost
So stand with us and show respect for those whose lives were lost
