The Class of Seven Six

-

Our nation sang as centuries now twice had passed the mark

Happy Days was on TV and Motown touched our hearts

But never mind the history that was churning in life’s mix

There was a crowd emerging, it was the Class of Seven Six.

Never will we lose the thoughts of memories we made

The new high school, the teachers and the friendships that were laid

Our teams had times of victory and our losses we can’t hide

But the pom-poms, band and majorettes not once would leave our side

We had our share of beauties and another share of beasts

We had the nerds, the farmer types and even had some freaks

Some were loved and some were feared but now we know for sure

That things external fade with time but people’s hearts endure

It was a special time of life when futures were not clear

We didn’t know what fate would yield nor did we want to hear

Things to come and what was next weren’t things we thought about

We worried more ‘bout who would drive so we could all hang out

“Loyal and true” we sang so we confess that certain lines were there

Race and color mattered then as well as thoughts we shared

We were young ….we couldn’t see that God is color blind

He made us all as equals, may we leave all that behind

And Lord we beg forgiveness for the ones we might have hurt

The ones we might have left alone, the words our lips would spurt

Our years of joy and tears have molded who we are today

Grant us love and patience for the friends who’ll never stray

There are too many we have lost, they passed before their day

We miss them and we won’t forget the smiles they sent our way

A not so subtle warning that our days on earth will pass

But we can leave a legacy for the future which will last

So let ‘em have a contest where they choose the very best

Line up all the stars and heroes, politicians and the rest

As for us, we won’t be watching as we humbly pass their picks

We would quickly choose each other….we are the Class of Seven Six!

(well, not actually paper)
